Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans make for a timeless addition to any room. Mount them on your ceiling and let them gently circulate the around you, keeping your room feeling fresh and airy. By reversing the direction of a ceiling fan, you can also use them to keep warm in winter, too!
The Most Cost-Effective Way to Cool a Room
Ceiling fans offer an effective yet affordable way for you to improve air circulation around any room. When a room has poor airflow, the air gets stale, stuffy, and unbearably hot. Ceiling fans get that stale air moving and quickly make your room feel fresh and cool.
How Do Ceiling Fans Work?
You probably know that warm air rises. If a room has poor airflow you’ll end up with a lot of warm air just under your ceiling, which in turn makes the whole room feel hot and stale. Ceiling fans prevent this from happening by getting that stale air moving again, cooling it down and pushing it to ground level. This helps create a gentle, natural-feeling cooling effect and helps your floor-standing fans work more effectively.
Benefits of a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans come with many benefits – some are obvious, but others you may not have realised! They’re an ideal choice for both homes and businesses and can be used to complement an existing aircon or air cooling system. Here are a few reasons why.
Cost-Effective
Ceiling fans offer tremendous value, especially when you consider you can use them all year round (more on this later). As they have large blades, you can use them to circulate air around very large rooms or use several fans to chill wide-open spaces like warehouses.
Stylish
Ceiling fans are a permanent fixture in any room. This means they have to look good – and luckily, most of them do! Ceiling fans give any room a timeless look, and with the massive range of styles on our site, you’re sure to find one that fits perfectly with your décor.
Creates a Gentle, Natural-Feeling Breeze
Ceiling fans are ideal if you want to make a room feel light and airy as they create a gentle and natural-feeling breeze. If you don’t like the icy blast of cold air emitted by a floor-standing fan or air conditioner, choose a ceiling fan for a more natural chill.
Complements Floor-Standing Fans
As they improve the natural airflow of a room, ceiling fans will help make your other air cooling solution more effective. If you have a tower fan or an air cooler, a ceiling fan will make their job much easier. The ceiling fan pushes cool air down to ground level, while your floor-standing fan circulates it around the room.
Use them All Year Round
Did you know you can use your ceiling fan to keep warm in winter? Most ceiling fans’ standard setting creates a downdraft, which pushes cool air down to ground level and creates a gentle breeze. However, most models have a switch which allows you to reverse the fan direction and create an updraft. Updrafts draw cold air from ground level and push warmer air back down, making your room feel warmer and helping your central heating run more efficiently. In summer, your fan should turn counter-clockwise to create a downdraft. In winter, your fan should turn clockwise to create an updraft.
Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan
With so many ceiling fans to choose from, how do you know which is the right one for you? This simple buyer’s guide will have you make the right choice.
Fan Size
Like all fans, the amount of air a ceiling fan can move is – in part – governed by its size. The bigger the fan, the more air it moves, and the cooler you’ll be. However, choosing a fan that’s too big can have the opposite effect – it might not be able to circulate air as efficiently. Make sure your fan has at least two inches of clearance on every side.
Lights
Most ceiling fans have integrated lighting. This means they can replace your existing light fixture, which makes installation a little easier as all the wiring is already there. Ceiling fan lights are available in many different styles, so choose the one that best suits your décor.
Number of Blades
You would think that fans with more blades can move more air than a fan with fewer blades, but this isn’t necessarily the case. More blades can move more air, but they’re also subject to more drag. The design of the blade is much more important, meaning a well-designed fan with three blades will move much more are than a poorly-designed fan with five.
Ceiling Fan Direction
As mentioned above, you can use your ceiling fan all year round by changing its direction. Set it spinning clockwise to stay warm in winter or counter-clockwise to stay cool in summer. Check how easy it is for you to change the direction of your ceiling fan before you buy – this is an important feature that’ll help you get much more use out of your fan!
