Air coolers are a fantastic option for hot stuffy offices or for the home during warm summer months and are a step up from a simple fan. To continue to get the best from them, it is necessary to keep them clean as any appliance that uses water has the capacity to degrade over time if not maintained properly.
Don’t be put off though; this is a fairly simple job and no more taxing than washing up a cup or rinsing out a dish cloth (which you probably do every day without thinking anyway).
An air cooler works by taking in air from the room and passing it over a pad that has absorbed water from a tank. The wet pad helps to cool the air that is then distributed around the room by the fan.
The two areas that use water – the tank and the evaporative pad - are the main parts of the unit that require some regular TLC.

Buy NowHow to clean the water tank
This is a really simple job because you will be refilling the water tank regularly anyway. To clean it, just remove as if you were refilling it, discard any water that is already in there, and give it a wash out with a neutral detergent. You can do this in a washing up bowl with washing up liquid, just as you would wash your dishes. Wipe over with a clean cloth and it can then be refilled with clean water (if you plan to use the air cooler again) and replaced in the unit.
How to clean the evaporative pad
Just as you wouldn’t keep re-using the same face cloth or tea towel without cleaning it, so the absorbent pad requires periodic cleaning. Remove the pad from the unit (check your manufacturer’s instructions on how to do this for your particular device) and wash through with clean water and detergent: again, washing up liquid is fine for this. Rinse out completely. If you’re using the air cooler again straight away you can replace this straightaway. If not, allow it to dry out and then replace.
How to clean the unit
As well as the above items, it’s always a good idea to give the whole unit a wipe over with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust and general grime.
These simple tasks will repay you with cleaner, fresher air and an air cooler unit that lasts longer and performs better.
