Keeping cool in high heat is a must, especially if you work from home or just want to get a good night’s sleep. The weather in recent years has become increasingly erratic and we can expect anything from morning frosts to heatwaves in the summer – sometimes both on the same day!
When temperatures start to soar, often an open window just won’t cut it and you need to find more effective solutions. One of the most popular, most effective, and most inexpensive ways of keeping cool is a simple fan (or fans – but we’ll come to that in a minute).
While all fans can work well, a tower fan has a range of benefits including a large fan area, quiet operation, and a small footprint that doesn’t require a lot of space. Great choice, if this is the option you’ve gone for, but did you realise that you can boost its cooling power further simply by being more strategic about where you place it?
Here is some guidance on locating your fan in relation to different aspects of the space:

1. The window
Fans in general are much more effective when located close to an open window. This is because, contrary to popular opinion, fans don’t actually cool air; they just move it. By forcing the air to flow around the room, it passes over your skin and evaporates the moisture from it. This causes it to lose heat energy which makes you feel cooler. By placing the fan near an open window, you enable it to use the room’s existing airflow which enhances its operation.
2. The door
This is the same principle as a window, and you can place it by the door as an alternative to the window. However, if you place a second fan by an open door you can boost it even more by creating cross ventilation. This just means that air is drawn in from the window and then forced out through the door, creating better ventilation. Position the second fan by the door facing outwards to facilitate the process.

Tower fans have the double whammy of a small footprint yet tall fan area which gives them good cooling power without requiring a lot of space. Their tall format means that they can be really effective when placed on the floor. However, bearing point 1 in mind, if you elevate them by placing them on a table or other piece of furniture, so that they are on a level with the window, you will get an even better result because you’re allowing it to work as much with the airflow as is possible.
4. People
If you are the only one using the room then by all means place the fan close to you. However, if you need it to give multiple occupants parable cooling, stick to placing it by the window and/or door, as outlined in items 1 and 2.

You don’t need to be scientifically minded to appreciate that air can flow more effectively if it has clear space. If a room is very crowded with furniture or other clutter, it’s going to compromise the circulation so try to place it where its airflow won’t be blocked by other objects or create some space to facilitate this.
