With summer coming up fast, you’ve already recognised the need for a fan to keep you cool during the warmest weather. Having looked at the different types of fan available, you’ve decided on a tower fan. Good choice: tower fans are effective, stylish, affordable, easy to fit in, and quiet to run. Now comes the question, why tower fan should you buy? With lots of options to choose from it can be hard to know which is the right one for you. You may even want different models for different rooms. To cut through all the options, here are the questions you need to be asking yourself in order to make an informed choice.
What is my budget?
Luckily, most tower fan models are pretty affordable – especially if you compare them to solutions such as air coolers or air conditioning. Our tower fans range from £23.99 for a desktop fan to £68.39 for this 31 inch Levante fan. As you might expect, the more features and cooling power, the more expensive it is. Prices vary within this range so whatever your budget, there should be one to suit you.

Buy NowHow much space do I have?
Tower fans all have a relatively slim profile, which makes them easy to fit into even the smallest rooms. All the fan blades are enclosed inside the unit, so you won’t be bumping into a bulky fan head in a smaller room. However, if you really are struggling for floor space, a shorter fan could easily be placed on a piece of furniture. The desktop fan already mentioned is just 12 inches tall and would fit easily on a desk or bedside table. The taller the fan, the more fan area it has so at the other end of the spectrum, you have models such as the MYLEK Slimline Tower fan which is a generous 48 inches tall. Having a clear idea about how discreet a fan would be in the room may also shape your thinking when it comes to size as some are slimline like the one just mentioned, and some wider and more of a statement, like the Cyclops.
Am I likely to move it?
Fans are very portable so can be moved into different rooms or even between home and the workplace or caravan etc. If you do intend to use the same fan in multiple locations then a lighter, smaller option may be preferable. Models such as this 30-inch fan from MYLEK is lightweight and even has a carrying handle.
Do I need to control it remotely?
While, on the surface, it may seem a bit lazy to want to control the fan remotely but if it located away from you and you’re working, in bed, or just comfortable on the sofa, it can be really useful to be able to turn it up, on, off, or operate other features via a remote control. This can also be useful if it’s slightly awkward to get to, such as needing to bend down to operate the control panel. Models such as the Levante tower fan even have a compartment for placing the remote control in so it doesn’t get separated in storage.
Is the aesthetic appearance important?
It may be a practical purchase but there’s no reason why a fan can’t be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Tower fans are among the most stylish types of fan and you have plenty of options to make them either blend in with the décor or stand out as a feature. Many come in a choice of black or white. Slimline models such as this MYLEK fan are sleek and modern, designs like the MYLEK Oscillating Tower Fan have minimalist simplicity, and quirky designs like the Cyclops have real character.
Will I use it when asleep?
One of the most common applications for a fan is to make it comfortable to sleep when temperatures soar. If this is your intended purpose, you will want it to operate as quietly as possible and you may benefit from a timer function. Tower fans are already one of the quietest fans on the market, due to their blades being encased in the housing, but even within the range, some are quieter than others. The Cyclops is one of the quietest models that we offer and it also has a timer which is great for sleeping as you can set it for a fixed period if you don’t want it to run all night. This MYLEK fan has 7 hourly timer settings so you can choose whether you just want it to run while you drift off to sleep or would like it to keep going long into the night.

Buy NowDo I want it to freshen the air as well as cool it?
Technically, fans don’t actually cool the air; they just move it around – but that’s perhaps for another post! If you want even more from your fan, consider one with an ioniser function – such as this 48-inch model. An ioniser function releases negative ions into the air. Negative ions are found in nature, such as after a thunderstorm, and it’s what makes the air feel fresh and clear. Not only will the ioniser function make the air seem fresher; it can also reduce pollen and dust particles which is particularly beneficial for those with allergies.
